THC documentation / 0.2.1
Make the world react
Everything needed to install THC, choose a visualizer, play audio, use multiplayer parties, and diagnose common setup problems.
Installation
Match the game and loader
THC 0.2.1 supports five validated Minecraft versions on Fabric and NeoForge. Download only the canonical jar matching the instance's Minecraft version and mod loader.
- 1.21.1 / Java 21: Fabric API 0.104.0+ or NeoForge 21.1.
- 1.21.11 / Java 21: Fabric API 0.141.4+ or NeoForge 21.11.42+.
- 26.1.1 / Java 25: Fabric API 0.145.4+ or NeoForge 26.1.1.15-beta+.
- 26.1.2 / Java 25: Fabric API 0.154.2+ or NeoForge 26.1.2.80+.
- 26.2 / Java 25: Fabric API 0.155.0+ or NeoForge 26.2.0.21-beta+.
- Confirm the exact Minecraft and Java versions used by the instance.
- Install the matching Fabric API or NeoForge runtime.
- Place exactly one THC jar in
<instance>/mods, then launch the game.
First launch
Your choices remain explicit
THC does not connect to the external relay or download audio tools just because Minecraft starts. Review the disclosure screens, then enable only the services you want.
- Relay: enables cross-server parties and shared visualizer state.
- Audio tools: the Download now action in each canonical jar installs pinned, hash-verified yt-dlp and FFmpeg builds. Modrinth may also host the identical canonical jars after moderation.
- Official update notice: when a newer compatible release exists, all current builds offer Go to site, Don't ask again, or Later. The check is non-blocking and does not download a mod.
- Configurable keybind: change the THC screen key in Minecraft Controls. The rebound key opens and closes THC consistently; H is only the default.
- Later: performs no download and leaves all unrelated client features available.
Visualizers
World effects and widgets are different
World types render around players in Minecraft space. Widgets are screen-space overlays. Selecting world lyrics does not require the lyrics widget, and changing a widget does not change another player's world visualizer.
- Choose from Frutiger Aero, Y2K Futurism, Glassmorphism, Skeuomorphism, Technozen, and Neumorphism interface themes.
- Adjust gradients, geometry, scale, bloom strength, dynamic light, movement, and audio reactivity.
- The BLOB world type is a filled, deforming mesh with a wire overlay, driven independently by live bass, mid, treble, level, tempo, and pulse data. Its dedicated Topology control changes mesh density and appears only while BLOB is selected; Line Thickness changes only the visible wire width.
- The Orbital media widget places previous, play or pause, and next controls around a circular progress ring, with track timing and compact visualizers inside the layout.
- World-space lyrics support Unicode text across Latin and diacritics, Cyrillic, Hangul, Japanese kana and kanji, Chinese Han characters, and shaped right-to-left Arabic.
- Use Other Players settings to enable or disable remote visualizers and particles globally or per player.
Audio and optional tools
Play locally or resolve provider links
Local audio capture and visualizer features can work without managed downloads. Provider-link playback may need yt-dlp plus FFmpeg, FFprobe, and FFplay.
- THC first looks for compatible tools inside the instance and on the system.
- The installer runs only after consent, pins exact versions, and verifies SHA-256 hashes in every canonical build.
- Manual installs belong in
<instance>/thc/binwith their original filenames.
Multiplayer relay
Share the scene across servers
When enabled, the encrypted relay at thc.alcoholicwizards.com/relay verifies Minecraft identity and synchronizes the state required for parties, playback, lyrics, and nearby player visualizers.
The relay wire format intentionally omits Minecraft and loader versions. Supported THC builds can therefore share party state independently of a server's protocol translation, including servers that use ViaVersion-like compatibility layers. The server still decides which Minecraft clients may connect.
- Enable relay sync in THC Settings.
- Enable Other Player Visualizers and the desired remote particle categories.
- Use per-player mute and volume controls for spatial playback.
Persistent parties
Stay grouped after reconnecting
Verified relay accounts allow party membership, roles, chat, queues, and playback state to survive ordinary reconnects. Party owners can manage membership and synchronized playback from the party interface.
Server mod
Server audio and request moderation
The optional THC server mod lets administrators provide server audio and moderate tracks or requests on that server. Players still use the client mod for audio playback, visualization, and local controls.
Troubleshooting
Check the signal in order
- Confirm the jar matches the exact Minecraft version, Java runtime, and active loader.
- Check
logs/latest.logfor THC, FFmpeg, yt-dlp, TLS, or relay messages. - Use the Status page to confirm direct downloads and relay availability.
- Verify per-player visualizers, particles, and mute controls are enabled as intended.
- Report reproducible problems with logs through GitHub Issues, but remove tokens, passwords, and personal data first.
